We’ve had Alfie, my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, since he was just 10 weeks old. He’s been my one constant through life’s many ups and downs, from when my husband died, to meeting my new partner, Craig, and being there when our little girl Ellie was born in 2013.
Needless to say, he means an awful lot to me. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with heart disease. I found out by chance from a routine check-up when the vet discovered a heart murmur.
I always knew the breed was prone to them, so I expected it would happen at some point. Luckily, treatment has helped to prolong his life and he’s now reached his 16th birthday – older than we ever expected. I’m pleased that he’s responding so well and still with us after all these years.
My advice for other dog owners is to make sure your dog is checked by the vet. Even if they are diagnosed with heart disease, there are ways to prolong their life. Alfie’s evidence of that.
